Presentación

  • Prof. Santiago Gómez-Ruiz

    He is Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, URJC, Spain and a member of the "Instituto de Investigación en Tecnologías para la Sostenibilidad" (ITPS) of the URJC.
    He holds a PhD from URJC (2004) and has been a Full Professor at URJC since 2020. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at Leipzig Univ. (2006-2007) and a Marie Curie Training Site Fellow (2003). He has participated in 25 competitive research projects and published over 200 articles in high-impact journals (h=34, 4000+ citations, 400+ per year in the last 5 years; h=40, 5400+ citations in Google Scholar). He is PI of the research team COMET-NANO, a high-output research group at URJC, leading two main research areas:
    • Multifunctional nanomaterials for therapeutic applications
    • Advanced photocatalytic materials for energy and environmental applications
    Since introducing these topics in 2009, he has published 125+ papers in top-tier journals (Angew Chem Int Ed, Coord Chem Rev, Carbon, J. Catalysis, J. Mater. Chem. B, Cancers, etc.) and contributed to books such as Environmental Nanotechnology (Springer, 2020) and Molecules at Work (Wiley, 2012). Recognized internationally, he appears in the Top 2% of researchers (Stanford Univ. 2021, 2024) and has delivered 40+ plenary and keynote lectures and 45+ invited talks at prestigious institutions worldwide (Tohoku Univ., Brooklyn College, TU Dortmund, LMU Munich, IICT Hyderabad, etc.). He was a finalist for the 3rd European Young Chemist Award (2010, EuCheMS).


    Research & Impact

    Prof. Gómez-Ruiz has led six AEI-MCIN projects (including a Proof-of-Concept project), a DAAD Spain/Germany project, and a URJC project on COVID-19 therapeutic agents (patent submitted). His anticancer nanosystems research has led to novel non-classical drug-delivery systems and theranostic alternatives for triple-negative breast cancer, bacterial diseases, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (preclinical trials).In photocatalysis, his team has designed ultrareactive materials for water decontamination, H2 production, and waste-to-energy technologies and is working on N2 and CO2 activation. His research has industrial impact, leading five knowledge transfer projects with Chevron Phillips and collaborations with Tolsa. He holds various patents on nanomaterials (WO/2021/005255, for example).


    Science for Society & Mentorship

    Committed to societal impact, he received a Projects for Society Grant (Fundación Eurocaja Rural) for photocatalytic sprays against SARS-CoV-2 and actively participates in science communication and seminars. A strong advocate for mentorship, he has supervised 7 PhD theses (3 ongoing), 4 Erasmus students, 45 Final Year Projects, and 6 Master Theses. His former PhD students hold key positions in academia and industry, with three leading independent research groups (Univ. del Valle, Univ. de La Salle, Univ. Makurdi).


    Editorial & Evaluator Roles

    Prof. Gómez-Ruiz is Associate Editor of Environmental Chemistry Letters and a reviewer for Nature Commun., Chem Rev, Adv. Materials, Chem Soc Rev, and others. He evaluates research proposals for REA EU-Marie Curie, AEI, UEFISCDI, TACR, and other institutions. A co-founder and former Secretary of the Young Chemists Group (RSEQ), he has 3400+ hours of teaching experience in higher education.
