Carlos Martínez-García holds an international Ph.D in Hispanic Linguistics (Complutense University of Madrid, 2025), and is currently Assistant Professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. His research area is syntax/semantics interface with a general contrastive perspective, considering Romance languages and English. His research topics include null objects, null subjects, null datives and ellipsis. He studies how null objects are interpreted and licensed in Spanish and compares the licensing conditions of null objects and other null arguments in Spanish and different Romance languages. For this purpose, Carlos Martínez-García combines a formal approach with the theories of ellipsis.
Regarding his international projection, it can be attested through publications in international journals, international book chapters and international conferences in several countries (Portugal, Germany, Austria, Dominican Republic, Hungary, etc.). He has also been visiting researcher at Goethe-Universität (Germany), where he co-organized the international conference NOCroDeP 2023, and at University of Illinois Chicago (US), under the funding of Ministerio de Universidades. Additionally, he has been visiting researcher at Universität zu Köln, under the funding of Prominence Fellowships 2026 (Collaborative Research Centre CRC 1252 Prominence in Language).
As to his projects, Carlos Martínez-García has developed his research within the framework of the research group Gramática teórica del español (Complutense University of Madrid) and the financed research project Variación gramatical del español: microparámetros en las interficies de la sintaxis con los niveles morfológico-léxico y semántico discursivo (PID2021-123617NB-C43, Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; Complutense University of Madrid). He has also worked on projects related to AI, such as Lengua Española e Inteligencia Artificial (LEIA), a joint enterprise of Real Academia Española, Complutense University of Madrid and Amazon Web Services. Additionally, he has experience with real data and dialectal variation as a team member working on the elaboration of a corpus of contemporary Spanish (CORPES XXI), a joint enterprise of Real Academia Española and the University of Alcalá to which Carlos Martínez-García has contributed since 2018.
