I graduated in Physics in 1996 at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) and that year I joined the non-linear Physics Group (Dept. of Condensed Matter, USC) as a fellow of the Xunta de Galicia and later on with an FPI fellowship to carry out a PhD thesis on the effects of excitability spatio-temporal fluctuations on the propagation and emergence of travelling waves in reaction-diffusion systems. During this period, I performed experimental, theoretical and modeling work together with short research stays at the University of Barcelona, Max Planck in Dortmund (Germany) and West Virginia University in Morgantown (USA). After defending my PhD thesis in 2001 with an outstanding cum laude qualification and with four Physical Review Letters published, I joined the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) as a full-time Assistant Professor (2001-2004) and in November 2009, I became Associate Professor at the URJC. In 2008 several colleagues from the URJC we formed the Complex Systems Group (CSG), whose main line of research has been the study of complex systems (social, biological and technological) within the framework of the theory of complex networks, in particular, the understanding of the relationship between the structure and dynamics (wave propagation, synchronization) in networks of nonlinear oscillators coupled with non-regular topologies, significantly contributing to the understanding of how the route to synchronization can be explosive, a phenomenon that may explain epileptic seizures, and be crucial in the management of electric power networks. With the will of initiating an experimental line in complex networks, I made several research visits to the Tel Aviv University in Israel, where I learned how to culture neurons in vitro with the goal of characterizing the structure of neuronal networks during their development and its relationship with the neuronal culture functionality. Thanks to a collaboration agreement between the URJC and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the CSG joined the Center for Biomedical Technology (CTB) in 2010 as the group of Biological Networks. Our research at the CTB aims at unveiling the structure-function relationship in complex systems, the mechanisms of integration and segregation in neuronal activity and to test new methods of brain functional networks reconstruction that allow the identification of markers in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. In the course of my research activity at the CTB I have supervised a PhD thesis on the self-organization of neuronal networks in vitro, developing an image segmentation tool to longitudinally track and model the network structure. In the last year I completed the supervision of the second PhD thesis and I am presently co-supervising a PhD thesis to investigate the functional network obtained from extracellular potentials recordings in parallel to the formation of the physical circuitry.
