I work in the field of marine biology focused on the systematics, morphology, and evolution of the microscopic invertebrates that inhabit benthic environments, known as meiofauna. I obtained my PhD at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 2014 (European PhD, extraordinary PhD prize). I have worked for 8,5 years at prominent international institutions: 4,5 as a postdoc at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, 2 as a Marie-Curie postdoc, and 2 as a Villum postdoc at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark.
The meiofauna or meiobenthos is extremely diverse gathering representatives of most animal phyla, some are ancestrally small, and some others have experienced miniaturization to colonize the interstitial realm. My research expands across multiple animal phyla; however, one of my main study groups are the scalidophorans, which gather three of the ubiquitous but most understudied animal phyla (loriciferans, priapulids and kinorhynchs). My research contributes to fill a significant gap of knowledge and can be classified into 4 categories: (1) large-scale, exploratory studies in meiofauna, (2) phylogenetics, (3) morphology and evolution of organ systems, (4) discovery and description of marine biodiversity.
For my research I use taxonomical and morphological techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), immunochemistry, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and 3D rendering. I am also very experienced with DNA- and RNA-based molecular techniques and phylogenomic inference.
