Joaquín Fernández-Mateo is Associate Professor of Applied Ethics and Computing and Society at the Rey Juan Carlos University. Previously, he was a Graduate Teaching Assistant of Applied Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility at Complutense University of Madrid (2012-2014), where he received his PhD (2014). As a predoctoral fellow, he worked on philosophical problems in the information society at the Ortega y Gasset Foundation (PhD Scholarship, 48 months).He holds a BA in Political Science from Complutense University of Madrid (2008) and two MAs, in Epistemology of Natural and Social Sciences from Complutense University (2012) and Political and Institutional Communication from Ortega y Gasset Foundation (2009).His research mainly focuses on Philosophy of Technology and Applied Ethics (environmental ethics, animal ethics, business ethics, and digital ethics). Joaquín is the Principal Investigator of the research project "The relationship between sustainability, human rights, and vulnerability in the international community: philosophical basis, political implications, and normative implementation," funded by Rey Juan Carlos University.Joaquín has participated as an associated researcher in the European cultural project "BODYNET-KHORÓS: Choral Arts and Embodied Media for Social Plurality and Planetary Health" (Project No. 101056068, CREA-CULT-2021-COOP), coordinated by Jaime del Val and the Asociación Transdisciplinar Reverso (2022-2025). He was also a member of the research team of the Knowledge Generation Project (2023-2026) entitled "Environmental Practice and Wild Animal Ethics in the Context of the Climate Crisis: A Longtermist Approach", led by Óscar Horta of the University of Santiago de Compostela and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the State Research Agency (AEI), Reference PID2022-142980NB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER, EU.He is currently a member of the research team of the new Knowledge Generation Project (2026-2029) entitled "ANIMAI: Animal Aligned Artificial Intelligence", directed by Catia Faria of the Complutense University of Madrid and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the State Research Agency (AEI), Reference PID2025-168792OA-I00.
As a sustainability consultant (2015-2018), his professional activity has been focused on variety of sustainability-related areas, such as sustainability reporting, animal welfare strategies and new corporate governance. He is a regular contributor to media and magazines such as Diario Responsable, Ethic and The Conversation, on topics ranging from digital ethics to corporate social responsibility.
---Joaquín Fernández-Mateo es Profesor Contratado Doctor de Ética Aplicada e Informática y Sociedad en la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. Anteriormente, fue Profesor Asistente de Ética Aplicada y Responsabilidad Social Corporativa en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2012-2014), donde obtuvo su doctorado (2014). Como investigador predoctoral, trabajó en los problemas filosóficos de la sociedad de la información en la Fundación Ortega y Gasset (beca de doctorado, 48 meses).Es licenciado en Ciencia Política por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2008) y posee dos másteres: en Epistemología de las Ciencias Naturales y Sociales por la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad Complutense (2012), y en Comunicación Política e Institucional por la Fundación Ortega y Gasset (2009).Su investigación se centra principalmente en la Filosofía de la Tecnología y la Ética Aplicada (ética ambiental, ética animal, ética empresarial y ética digital). Joaquín es el Investigador Principal del proyecto IMPULSO a la investigación "La relación entre sostenibilidad, derechos humanos y vulnerabilidad en la comunidad internacional: bases filosóficas, implicaciones políticas e implementación normativa", financiado por la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.Joaquín ha sido miembro participante, como investigador asociado, del proyecto europeo de cultura "BODYNET-KHORÓS: Artes Corales y Medios Encarnados para la Pluralidad Social y la Salud Planetaria", número de proyecto 101056068, CREA-CULT-2021-COOP, coordinado por Jaime del Val y la Asociación Transdisciplinar Reverso (2022-2025). Igualmente, ha sido miembro del equipo de investigación del proyecto Generación de Conocimiento (2023-2026) "Environmental Practice and Wild Animal Ethics in the Context of the Climate Crisis: A Longtermist Approach", dirigido por Óscar Horta, de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Agencia Estatal de Investigación, con referencia PID2022-142980NB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ FEDER, UE.

Animal Aligned Artificial Intelligence", proyecto dirigido por Catia Faria, de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Agencia Estatal de Investigación, con referencia PID2025-168792OA-I00.Como consultor de sostenibilidad (2015-2018), su actividad profesional se ha centrado en diversas áreas relacionadas con la sostenibilidad, como la elaboración de informes de sostenibilidad, estrategias de bienestar animal y nueva gobernanza corporativa. Colabora habitualmente en medios y revistas como Diario Responsable, Ethic y The Conversation, en temas que van de la ética digital a la responsabilidad social corporativa.
