Joaquín Fernández-Mateo is Associate Professor of Applied Ethics and Computing and Society at the Rey Juan Carlos University. Previously, he was a Graduate Teaching Assistant of Applied Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility at Complutense University of Madrid (2012-2014), where he received his PhD (2014). As a predoctoral fellow, he worked on philosophical problems in the information society at the Ortega y Gasset Foundation (PhD Scholarship, 48 months).He holds a BA in Political Science from Complutense University of Madrid (2008) and two MAs, in Epistemology of Natural and Social Sciences from Complutense University (2012) and Political and Institutional Communication from Ortega y Gasset Foundation (2009).His research mainly focuses on Philosophy of Technology and Applied Ethics (environmental ethics, animal ethics, business ethics, and digital ethics). Joaquín is the Principal Investigator of the research project "The relationship between sustainability, human rights, and vulnerability in the international community: philosophical basis, political implications, and normative implementation," funded by Rey Juan Carlos University.He is a participating member, as associate researcher, of the European culture project "BODYNET- KHOROS. Choral Arts and Embodied Media for Social Plurality and Planetary Health" project number 101056068, CREA-CULT-2021-COOP, coordinated by Jaime del Val and the Transdisciplinary Association Reverso (2022-2025). He is a member of the project "Environmental Practice and Wild Animal Ethics in the Context of the Climate Crisis: A Longtermist Approach," funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spanish Research Agency, reference PID2022-142980NB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ FEDER, UE.
As a sustainability consultant (2015-2018), his professional activity has been focused on variety of sustainability-related areas, such as sustainability reporting, animal welfare strategies and new corporate governance. He is a regular contributor to media and magazines such as Diario Responsable, Ethic and The Conversation, on topics ranging from digital ethics to corporate social responsibility.
