Presentación

  • I am an ecologist interested in theoretical questions related to Community Ecology and the mechanisms responsible of coexistence, especially at the neighbourhood scale. In this context, I have worked mainly with plant communities in very stressful habitats with low primary productivity, such as high mountains, drylands, seasonal tropical dry forests and during the last 15 years in restrictive soils from what I have been one of the world references. I am also concerned with global problems related to the dramatic biodiversity loss and to climate change. To help to mitigate this crisis, we are also actively working in restoration ecology.

    I have 320 (may 2023) articles in peer-reviewed journals including 10 in top-ranked multidisciplinary journals such as Science/Nature, Proceedings of the Royal Society and Biological Reviews, and many others in high-ranked journals in Ecology and Botany (    10 Journal of Ecology, 4 Functional Ecology, 8 Ecography, 5 Ecology, 3 Ecological Applications, 12 American J Botany, 9 Oikos, 5 New Phytologist, 5 Oecologia, 13 Annals of Botany, 21 Journal of Vegetation Science).

    Convinced that the highest impact in our Society is achieved through training and mentoring new researchers, I have invested a critical part of my work to the supervision of students. I have supervised 30 PhD students from very diverse nationalities. I am especially proud of the fact that most of them are well-known researchers, conducting their own ecological labs in permanent posts in very different institutions. One of the milestones in this sense, was the development of Tropical Ecology Lab of the UTPL in Loja, Ecuador (https://investigacion.utpl.edu.ec/grupos/ecosslab). This is one of the most productive and influent ecological research centers in South America and it is directed by Dr. Espinosa, who was one of my doctoral students. I have also hosted more than 20 post docs, but also 10 foreign senior scientists who have conducted research stays of more than one month in my lab.
