Presentación

  • I teach and research at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos from 2015. Before, I have worked as a Lecturer at Universidad de Alcalá  and as a Lecturer and later as  Associate Professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

    My first research works were regional studies on flora and vegetation, both in Spain and North America. Then I participated actively in several initiatives related to the conservation of both flora and vegetation, such as the Atlas and Red List of the Endangered Flora of Spain, the National Inventory of Habitats (drawn up under the Directive 92/43 EEC on Habitats) which led to the development of useful tools for Nature conservation in Spain.

    From 2005 on, my main research area is spatial ecology. The objective of this line is the development of numeric and statistical methods to address ecological questions. One of its derivations is the dissemination of these new tools as open source software. I have also developed a reseach line on tropical ecology; within this line I have supervised several PhD's. From the combination of these two lines result most of my high impact papers, and several R packages.

    My research has been funded through public, competitive sources. I have been the principal investigator of 6 national competitive research grants and I have participated as researcher in many others. I also participated in several contracts with national and regional administrations and consultancy companies, and I have been the PI in three of them. 

    As a result of my research I have published many articles in peer-reviewed journals listed in the JCR, (most of them published from 2005, when I started my main research line). These include top multidisciplinary, ecological and plant science journals such as Science (as first author), Journal of Ecology, Ecography, Methods in Ecology and Evolution, Molecular Ecology Resources, Journal of Vegetation Science, New Phytologist, Oikos, etc. New methods developed during my research are published in 11 R-packages . In addition, I have published around 19 papers in non-SCI national and international scientific journals, 26 book chapters , I have edited a book on spatial ecology methods and co-authored a book on statistical methods in ecology.

    I have also supervised 9 PhD's, and several MSc and BSc projects. 

    My teaching experience includes thousands of hours in undergraduate courses in the Degrees in Agricultural Engineering, Biology, Environmental Science and Experimental Science, and hundreds of hours in several Masters and Doctorates in Natural resources Conservation, both at URJC and elsewhere.
