I am a plant ecologist interested in understanding the response of forests and treeless ecosystems to global change. I use dendrochronology as a main tool to include a temporal perspective in ecological studies, although I complement it with functional approaches and ecological modeling. I started this research line in 2016, when I joined the Technical Particular University of Loja, in Ecuador, after presenting my PhD thesis in Spain in September 2015 on the role of biotic interactions as drivers of ecological responses at individual, population and community levels. In Ecuador, I studied the secondary growth adjustments of tropical dry forest trees to climate to increase knowledge on coexistence patterns in highly diverse ecosystems. Further studies with generalist species across broad temperature and rainfall gradients allowed me to deepen this line, using quantitative wood anatomy to approach trees¿ and shrubs' physiological responses.
I have broad scientific and educational perspectives thanks to my education in different Spanish universities and to the development of several stays in national and international research centers, funded by different competitive grants, which allowed me to approach different ways to work and teach. These stays also gave me the opportunity to establish solid collaborations with researchers from other institutions (University of Cádiz in Spain, Research Center for Patagonian Ecosystems in Chile) and to develop my teamwork skills in different contexts.
I like teaching and share my passion for science and up-to-date knowledge with my students. Throughout my career I have taught subjects related to ecology, botany, zoology, dendrochronology, data analysis and ethics at different Universities in Spain (UVa, UCA, URJC) and abroad (UTPL, Ecuador) and I use to supervise undergraduate and Master students' theses.
