Presentación
  • I am a Full Professor (Catedrático de Universidad) at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, a public university in Madrid. I mainly do research in following two fields:

    a) Software engineering: I am specialized in software analytics of Free/Libre/Open Source Software systems. My primary focus is on mining software repositories, socio-technical issues such as development community metrics, software evolution, and cost estimation.
    b) Computational thinking: I investigate the introduction of computer programming and artificial intelligence at an early age. I have co-authored the Dr. Scratch assessment tool.

My research has been awarded several times, including conference best paper awards (CHI 2025, FAIRNESS 2025, CHI 2020, SANER 2019, ESEM 2018, EDUCON 2016, OSS 2012, ICSOFT 2007, MSR 2006), two significant contribution awards (MSR 2020 and 2015), a best reviewer award (ICSE 2025) and a Google RISE Award (2015). I am an IEEE Senior Member and have been the general chair of ICSME in 2018 and of MSR in 2021. According to Google Scholar, my h-index is 65, and in Derek M. Jones' 2020 book "Evidence-based Software Engineering based on the publicly available data" I am listed as one of the major players in the field worldwide.

In 2012, my research group founded a spin-off company, Bitergia (www.bitergia.com), which does software analytics.

I am a passionate lecturer and my hope is that my students end up being as passionate as I am in relation to technology, free software and programming.
